RESOLUTION - Recognizing the Liberty North High School Football Team for their hard work and diligence throughout the 2023 football season, leading to their historic Class 6 State Championship victory.

WHEREAS, a majority of Liberty Public School’s populus resides in the City of Kansas City. The Liberty North Football program, led by Head Coach Andy Lierman, has been a prominent contender in Missouri high school football for the past seven years. During that time, through the work of the coaching staff, the community, and the players, Liberty North built a program committed to attitude and effort. These values guided players to have an intense sense of urgency to achieve Missouri football's highest reward; and
WHEREAS, through years of battling for success, Liberty North racked up several Conference and District championships but struggled to achieve their ultimate goal. Nevertheless, Lierman and his team gained an unprecedented amount of attention from not only supporting members of the community but throughout the entire metropolitan area. Soon enough, Liberty North was gaining traction on a state and national level; and
WHEREAS, in the four previous seasons, Liberty North has maintained a record of 45-7. More specifically, with a loss during week one, the football team had a record of 13-1 this season, which is the most football wins from a single season in the school's history. Additionally, Liberty North is the first school in Liberty Public School history to win a state championship in football; and
WHEREAS, Liberty North breezed through the 2023 football season, trumping almost every team by double digits. Along the way, they picked up yet another Suburban Gold Conference Championship, District 7 Championship, and numerous other team awards; and
WHEREAS, notably, Melvin Laster, a four-year starter at Middle Linebacker and 4-star UNLV commit, was awarded the Buch Buchanan Award three years in a row and was the first player in history to achieve so. Furthermore, Laster was named the Class 6 Defensive Player of the Year, with his teammate Keelan Smith getting rewarded Class 6 Offensive Player of the Year. Smith played tight end and receiver and is a 3-star Nebraska commit; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby display their gratitude to Liberty North for their hard-fought road to the 2023 Class 6 Missouri State Championship; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Head Coach Andy Lierman for leading the team through the adversity faced to achieve the accomplishments they have strived for.
