RESOLUTION - Congratulating the Center for Neighborhoods for its dedication and services to the community.

WHEREAS, the Center was established in the Spring of 2017 by Dr. Jacob Wagner, Assistant Professor of Urban Development at UMKC, and then Missouri State Representative Kiki Curls; and

 

WHEREAS, the Center was established to train and support neighborhood leaders in Missouri.  This past fall CFN held their 13th Cohort.  All cohorts and other training the center provides are free to Missouri Residents.  Neighborhood leaders for Kansas City, Missouri have attended cohorts, but also Raytown, Grandview and Independence; and

 

WHEREAS, the cohort is based on 4 pillars: Leadership and Governance, Technology, Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods and Community Development with a  5th pillar being added this next Spring; and

 

WHEREAS, after graduation, the Center continues to support, encourage and provide training to cohort members.  The center and selected cohorts members have participated in a small apartment study (2021), QLID Park Plans.  A weekly News You Can Use goes out to over 800 people, and on December 2, the Center will host the second State of the Neighborhood; and

 

WHEREAS, the Center has  trained approximately 250 neighborhood leaders and over 100 neighborhoods.  This fall at their annual Breaking Bread Event that celebrates neighborhood leaders they honored 23 neighborhood leaders as Legacy Leaders, neighborhood leaders that are over the age of 70; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate the Center for Neighborhoods; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Thomas Meyer, Communications, LaMonica Upton, Community Engagement, Dina Newman, Director, and Jacob Wagner, Urban Planning Professor with UMKC, with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for their dedication and services to make our community a better place to live.
