RESOLUTION - Honoring a remarkable achievement in the realm of intellectual discourse and public speaking and celebrating Senior Jack Unsell of Park Hill High School, whose dedication, eloquence, and critical thinking have earned him the title of Class 2 Lincoln-Douglas Debate State Champion.

WHEREAS, formed as the National Forensic League in 1925 by Bruno Ernst Jacob, the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) is the largest interscholastic speech and debate organization serving middle school and high school students in the United States and the Lincoln-Douglas Debate comes from the tradition of the great debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas; and

 

WHEREAS, Jack has demonstrated not only mastery of argumentation but also a profound understanding of the issues at hand where his ability to dissect complex topics, construct compelling arguments, and engage in thoughtful rebuttals has set him apart; and

 

WHEREAS, Jack Unsell of Park Hill High School has been declared the Missouri State Champion in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate. He secured the title with a dominating 3-0 victory in the championship round and in addition, secured a third-place victory in International Extemporaneous Speaking at the Missouri State Speech and Debate Tournament; and

 

WHEREAS, building upon these accomplishments, Jack has qualified for the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions (NIETOC), a prestigious national competition that brings together the nation's top speech and debate students. His qualification is a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence and his ability to perform under pressure; and

 

WHEREAS, these accomplishments reflect the values that our community holds dear, critical thinking, effective communication, and a commitment to respectful civil disagreements where his victories are not merely a testament to his individual talent but also to the dedication and support of his coaches, mentors, and peers; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize and honor Senior Jack Unsell of Park Hill High School, whose dedication, eloquence, and critical thinking have earned him the title of Class 2 Lincoln-Douglas Debate State Champion; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Jack Unsell with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for his outstanding achievement in the Missouri State Speech and Debate Tournament.
