RESOLUTION - Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month and recognizing the contributions of the KC Rainbow Tour.

WHEREAS, LGBTQ+ History Month is celebrated in October and honors the history, achievements, and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals; and
WHEREAS, it also serves to educate the public about the ongoing struggle for equality and to highlight key moments and figures that have shaped the LGBTQ+ rights movement; and
WHEREAS, the KC Rainbow Tour is a free, self-guided driving audio tour created to uncover and celebrate the rich LGBTQ+ history of Kansas City and was founded by Joel Barrett who was inspired to document voices and stories that had been overlooked; and
WHEREAS, the tour leverages the VoiceMap app to guide participants through more than 20 destinations, each with audio narration that mixes voices from past and present members of the city’s queer community; and
WHEREAS, the route spans a wide range of neighborhoods and historic sites from the UMKC area and downtown to the historic Jazz District, the Womontown women’s enclave, the Liberty Memorial area, and former gay bars throughout Kansas City; and
WHEREAS, KC Rainbow Tour invites both locals and visitors to experience how diverse communities, spaces, and histories have intersected across geography and generations while uniquely highlighting the history of LGBTQ+ rights and culture in Kansas City; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month and recognize the contributions of the KC Rainbow Tour; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the KC Rainbow Tour and its founder, Joel Barrett with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for their efforts to educate Kansas City on the LGBTQ+ community.
