RESOLUTION - Declaring October 2026 as Arts and Humanities Month in Kansas City.

body

WHEREAS, the arts and humanities reflect the creativity, knowledge, history, imagination, and lived experiences of our communities, enriching our lives, strengthening our connections to one another, and telling the stories of who we are and who we aspire to become; and

WHEREAS, Kansas City’s artists, culture bearers, cultural institutions, educators, and creative organizations are essential to our city’s identity, strengthening neighborhoods, inspiring innovation, expanding opportunity, and contributing to our quality of life; and

WHEREAS, arts and culture are also a significant economic engine for our region, with Greater Kansas City’s nonprofit arts and culture sector generating more than $615 million in annual economic activity, supporting 8,977 jobs, and generating $97.5 million in local, state, and federal tax revenue; and

WHEREAS, arts and culture strengthen Kansas City’s broader economy by attracting visitors, supporting local businesses, creating jobs, and generating activity across hospitality, tourism, transportation, retail, education, and other sectors throughout the region; and

WHEREAS, in 2026, Kansas City welcomed visitors from around the world as a Host City for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, creating an extraordinary opportunity to share our region’s creativity, history, and character on a global stage; throughout this historic moment, artists, performers, cultural institutions, and creative organizations animated public spaces, shared the stories of our communities, fostered connection across cultures, and demonstrated the essential role of arts, culture, and the humanities in making Kansas City a welcoming, vibrant, and memorable community for residents and visitors alike; and

WHEREAS, National Arts and Humanities Month provides an opportunity each October to recognize the artists, organizations, educators, scholars, cultural institutions, and residents whose creativity and stewardship strengthen our communities and to encourage greater participation in the arts and humanities throughout the year; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council do hereby declare October 2026 as Arts and Humanities Month in Kansas City; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to representatives of Kansas City’s arts and cultural community, with the Mayor and Council encouraging all residents and visitors to experience, celebrate, and support the arts and humanities and the people and organizations that make Kansas City a vibrant, creative, and welcoming place to call home.
