RESOLUTION - Honoring John Sharp for his unwavering commitment to public service and the people of Kansas City.

WHEREAS, John Sharp was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin on February 13, 1944; and

 

WHEREAS, John Sharp received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas, where he majored in political science and journalism, and a master’s degree from the University of Missouri - Kansas City in public administration before moving to the Ruskin Heights community in 1967, where he has resided for the last 58 years; and

 

WHEREAS, John Sharp served five terms in the Missouri House of Representatives, diligently representing the Hickman Mills area, and four terms as the 6th District Councilperson; and

 

WHEREAS, John Sharp has also served on the Hickman Mills School Board and the Hickman Mills Educational Foundation, where he championed scholarships and expanding opportunities for local students; and 

 

WHEREAS, in January 2025, the school district board voted unanimously to rename the district’s early education facility as the John Sharp Early Education Center for his service and contributions to the Hickman Mills Consolidated School District; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2015, John Sharp received the Kansas City Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s Evelyn Wasserstrom Award in recognition of his commitment to the causes of freedom and justice for minorities and oppressed people; and

 

WHEREAS, outside of elected office, John Sharp has worked to improve the lives of his fellow Kansas Citians by actively engaging with numerous civic and community groups and serving as a board member for several organizations focused on empowering Kansas Citians, building quality communities, and working to make Kansas City a better place to live; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor and celebrate the achievements and years of dedicated public service of John Sharp; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to John Sharp in recognition of his commitment and service to the residents of Kansas City.
