RESOLUTION - Honoring La Fonda El Taquito Restaurant for nearly fifty years of service, culture, and community on Kansas City’s Westside.

body

WHEREAS, La Fonda El Taquito was founded in 1978 at 17th Street and Summit Avenue by Agustín and Teresa Medina, along with their children, beginning with only a few tables and a counter, and making history as the first taqueria in Kansas City; and

WHEREAS, what began as a small neighborhood restaurant quickly earned a citywide and regional reputation for exceptional food, warm hospitality, and deep community roots; and

WHEREAS, La Fonda El Taquito has long served as far more than a restaurant, it has been a gathering place for the Mexican-American community and for Kansas City as a whole, where families celebrate birthdays, baptisms, and life’s milestones, friendships are formed, civic conversations unfold, and fundraisers are held to strengthen the Westside and the broader community; and

WHEREAS, La Fonda has been affectionately known as the “Mexican Cheers” a place where everybody knows your name and where owners Maria Chaurand Medina and Sandy Medina have welcomed generations of patrons not merely as customers, but as family; and

WHEREAS, over the decades, La Fonda El Taquito has welcomed neighbors and families alongside local, state, and national leaders, including mayors, city council members, governors, members of Congress, and presidential cabinet members, as well as athletes, musicians, and business leaders, drawn together by great food and a shared sense of belonging; and

WHEREAS, after nearly five decades of feeding and nurturing Kansas City, Maria Chaurand Medina and Sandy Medina are closing this remarkable chapter and entering a well-earned retirement, leaving behind a legacy rooted in community, culture, generosity, and care; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby extend their appreciation that we hereby honor and celebrate La Fonda El Taquito Restaurant for its nearly fifty years of outstanding service, cultural significance, and lasting impact on Kansas City; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof, and that a copy hereof be presented to Maria Chaurand Medina and Sandy Medina for their dedication, leadership, and love for their community, which have left an indelible mark on the Westside and the city as a whole.
