RESOLUTION NO. 260965

title

Sponsor: Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw

RESOLUTION - Declaring November 2026 as National Family Caregivers Month.

body

WHEREAS, family caregivers are the backbone of our nation’s long-term care system, providing essential physical, emotional, and financial support to loved ones with chronic illness, disability, or the challenges of aging; and

WHEREAS, roughly one in four Kansas Citians is currently serving as a caregiver for a family member or friend, making caregiving one of the most common yet often invisible life experiences in our community; and

WHEREAS, the vast majority of this care is provided unpaid, representing an enormous personal and financial sacrifice that caregivers make out of love and commitment to those who depend on them; and

WHEREAS, family caregivers frequently balance caregiving responsibilities alongside full-time employment, parenting, and their own health needs, often at significant cost to their own well-being; and

WHEREAS, family caregivers often serve as advocates, care coordinators, and trusted companions, navigating complex health and social service systems to ensure their loved ones receive quality care; and

WHEREAS, we recognize the need to develop and expand resources, respite services, and support systems that ease the burden on family caregivers and help sustain them in their vital role; and

WHEREAS, National Family Caregivers Month is an opportunity to honor the dedication of family caregivers, raise awareness of the challenges they face, and reaffirm our community’s commitment to supporting them; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare November 2026 as National Family Caregivers Month in Kansas City; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Sandwiched KC with the Mayor and Council’s sincere appreciation for the invaluable care, dedication, sacrifice, and compassion they provide each day.
