Celebrating the 55th Anniversary of the Kansas City Missouri Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded in 1913 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. by twenty-two courageous young women committed to principles of sisterhood, service, and scholarship; and
WHEREAS, on June 13, 1969, seventeen members of the Sorority signed an official application to charter the Kansas City Missouri Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; and
WHEREAS, during the past 55 years the Kansas City Missouri Alumnae Chapter has grown with more than 300 sorority members and a full spectrum of public service programs in support of the Delta’s national five point thrust: Economic Development, Educational Development, Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness and Involvement, and International Awareness and Involvement; and
WHEREAS, the Chapter has awarded more than $1.8 million in college scholarships to participants of the Cotillion youth development program, and members have provided many hours of volunteer service with such agencies as Sheffield Place Women’s Shelter, Sisters in Christ, Shirley’s Kitchen Cabinet, Giving Hope and Help, and Harvesters; and
WHEREAS, the Chapter actively works to educate and mobilize public support for issues of social justice and annually hosts the Women of Courage Awards to honor women who have significantly impacted the community; and
WHEREAS, the Chapter will host a gala to celebrate its “55th Anniversary of Moving Forward with Fortitude” on June 8, 2024, at the historic Delta Athenaeum; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate the Kansas City Missouri Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on this 55th Anniversary; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution will be presented to the Chapter President, Dionne Greenfield with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for continuing Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s 111-year old legacy of sisterhood, service, and scholarship.
