RESOLUTION - Acknowledging October 2025 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Kansas City and recognizing June Mitchell for her leadership of the Women of Hope Group.

WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness Month was established to address the lack of public knowledge and open dialogue surrounding breast cancer; and
WHEREAS, Former First Lady Betty Ford, following her diagnosis in 1974, became a pivotal advocate by courageously sharing her story-breaking the silence and bringing national attention to the disease; and
WHEREAS, since then, the month of October has served as a time to educate, raise awareness, and empower individuals to take charge of their breast health through early detection, routine screenings, and informed medical decisions; and
WHEREAS, breast cancer affects both women and men and encompasses various types, making continued investment in research, early detection, and treatment essential. Breast Cancer Awareness Month provides an important opportunity to inform communities about available resources, support networks, and advances in care; and
WHEREAS, June Mitchell has led the Women of Hope Group at Pleasant Valley Church for the past 21 years, demonstrating exceptional leadership, compassion, and commitment to those affected by breast cancer; and
WHEREAS, Women of Hope is a breast cancer survivor and support group created to offer encouragement, strength, and a sense of community to individuals during and after their cancer journey; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby formally recognize October 2025 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and honor June Mitchell; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to June Mitchell with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for her outstanding leadership and dedication through the Women of Hope Group, whose work continues to inspire and uplift the lives of so many.
