RESOLUTION - Celebrating Women’s History Month, International Women’s Day, and March Holidays recognizing women in diverse career fields by honoring the rich diversity internationally born women employees bring to the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, International Women’s Day was first recognized in 1911 by multiple countries including Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland to fight the oppression and inequality against women and to advocate for shorter hours, better pay, and voting rights. One week after the first celebration, a New York City fire took the lives of 140 working women and became the catalyst to fight for better working conditions and labor legislation in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations marked International Women’s Day as a holiday for the first time to be celebrated on March 8, 1975; and
WHEREAS, a consortium of women’s groups and historians organized by the National Women’s History Project successfully lobbied President Jimmy Carter to recognize the first National Women’s History Week in March of 1980. Congress later passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as Women’s History Month in 1987; and
WHEREAS, recognition of a variety of women careers such as construction, aviation, judges, working moms, and the fight for equal pay are highlighted through-out the month of March; and
WHEREAS, throughout the month of March, specifically, and throughout the year, we celebrate the leadership and significant contributions of all women employees within City of Kansas City; and
WHEREAS, this year, we honor the internationally born women employees of the City of Kansas City, Missouri that bring new perspectives, great diversity, and vibrancy to our city. Their dedication, loyalty, resilience and leadership makes our city stronger, more inclusive, and a better place for all; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby honor the internationally born women working for the City of Kansas City; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Aveen Noori and internationally born women who have chosen to pursue a career at the City of Kansas City, Missouri with the gratitude of the Mayor and Council for the impact of their hard work and unwavering commitment.
