RESOLUTION - Honoring Kimberly Sixta as the 2026 Missouri Teacher of the Year.

WHEREAS, Kimberly Sixta has dedicated over 20 years to teaching social studies at Ruskin High School in Kansas City, Missouri, where she has championed equity, student voice, and lifelong learning; and
WHEREAS, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, graduating Cum Laude from Avila University with minors in Anthropology, Theology, and Secondary Education, followed by a Master of Science in Education from Avila and additional leadership coursework at Baker University, where she passed the ISLLC exam; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Sixta serves as Social Studies Department Chair, ACT Test Coordinator, and sponsor of the National Honor Society, Student Council, and Upward Bound, exemplifying her commitment to student leadership and academic success; and
WHEREAS, she has mentored countless students beyond the classroom, fostering civic engagement, college readiness, and personal growth through programs that empower young people to lead and succeed; and
WHEREAS, her exceptional contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including 2026 and 2014 Teacher of the Year, the 2018 Excellence in Teaching Award, 2023 Fox 4 Teacher of the Month, multiple 20/20 Leadership Partner of the Year honors, and the Bronze Pelican Award for youth development through Scouting; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of her sustained excellence in education and service to the community, Kimberly Sixta has been named the 2026 Missouri Teacher of the Year by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby honor and congratulate Kimberly Sixta for her extraordinary service to education and her recognition as the 2026 Missouri Teacher of the Year; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Ms. Kimberly Sixta as a token of the City’s deep appreciation for her contributions to the lives of students, families, and the Kansas City community.
