RESOLUTION - Recognizing September 26, 2026, as Walk for Alopecia Day.

WHEREAS, the National Alopecia Areata Foundation® (NAAF®) serves the nearly 7 million Americans affected by alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that causes unpredictable hair loss and can have significant emotional, social, and economic impacts on those affected and their families; and
WHEREAS, NAAF works to build an informed, supported, and empowered community while advancing research toward improved treatments and, ultimately, a cure for alopecia areata; and
WHEREAS, NAAF is the world’s largest nonprofit funder of alopecia areata research, advocacy, and community support, with more than 40 years of leadership in driving awareness, advancing research, supporting individuals and families, and advocating for meaningful change; and
WHEREAS, NAAF’s 4th Annual Walk For Alopecia® serves as the culminating event of Alopecia Areata Awareness Month, bringing together individuals with alopecia areata, families, caregivers, friends, coworkers, healthcare professionals, and supporters to raise awareness, advance research for better treatments and a cure, strengthen community support, advocate for change, and help end the stigma associated with hair loss; and
WHEREAS, for the first time, Kansas City will join more than 40 communities across the United States participating in NAAF’s 4th Annual Walk For Alopecia® on September 26, 2026, at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, demonstrating Kansas City’s commitment to awareness, inclusion, advocacy, and support for those affected by alopecia areata; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize September 26, 2026, as “Walk For Alopecia Day” throughout Kansas City, Missouri, and encourage all residents, whether personally affected by alopecia areata or standing in support of those who are, to participate in and support this important community event; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Lela Williams, Customer Service Supervisor, Public Works Department, in recognition of her leadership in bringing Kansas City’s inaugural Walk For Alopecia® to our community, and to the ASSET and Black Women’s Leadership Council (BWLC) Employee Resource Groups in recognition of their support of this important endeavor.
