Truman worked briefly in Kansas City as a clerk for two banks. After serving in WWI in his younger years, he went on to run a successful campaign for county judge. Later on, he ran for U.S. Senate, being elected in 1935. In July 1944, Truman was nominated to run for Vice President with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. On January 20, 1945, he took the vice-presidential oath, and after President Roosevelt's unexpected death only eighty-two days later on April 12, 1945, he was sworn in as the nations' thirty-third President; and

WHEREAS, President Harry S. Truman signed a bill into law in 1949 designating June 14 of each year as National Flag Day to honor our flag and to “rededicate ourselves to the ideals for which it stands”; and

WHEREAS, the first American Flag was accepted on June 14, 1777, when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white,” and that ‘the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation,” to unify the Americans under one flag that signified what they were fighting for and what America continues to fight for; and

WHEREAS, with the red symbolizing hardiness and valor, the white symbolizing purity and innocence, and the blue representing vigilance, perseverance, and justice, the U.S. flag represents and symbolizes the convictions of the United States; and

WHEREAS, Flag Day celebrates the birth of the American flag, uniting this great nation, giving time to reflect on its history and traditions and all that the flag represents; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby direct the City Manager to hang a 6x10 foot American flag from the balcony of City Hall to honor the legacy of President Harry S. Truman through National Flag Day, June 14, 2024.
