RESOLUTION - Declaring the week of April 7-13, 2025, as National Public Health Week in Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Health Department recognizes the week of April 7, 2025, as National Public Health Week, with the theme of “It Starts Here” highlighting the importance of making a difference in our home, community and state; and
WHEREAS, this year celebrates the 30th anniversary of National Public Health Week, and in the past 30 years significant strides have been made in public health; and
WHEREAS, racial and ethnic minority populations in Kansas City, Missouri continue to experience disparities in the burden of illness and death, as compared with the entire population of the United States; and
WHEREAS, a person’s health status can differ drastically by ZIP code due to differences in the built environment, environmental quality, community context, access to healthy food, access to education and access to health care; and
WHEREAS, the Kansas City Health Department uses National Public Health Week to recognize its employees, educate public policymakers, public health professionals and the public on issues that are important to improve the health of the people of Kansas City; and
WHEREAS, the Kansas City Health Department helps communities prevent, prepare, withstand and recover from the impact of a full range of health threats, ranging from infectious disease outbreaks to natural disaster preparedness; and
WHEREAS, efforts to adequately support public health and the prevention of disease and injury can continue to transform a health system focused on treating illness into a health system focused on preventing disease and injury and promoting wellness; NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the week of April 7-13, 2025, as National Public Health Week in Kansas City, Missouri; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Kansas City Health Department Staff with the Mayor and Council calling upon the people of Kansas City, Missouri to observe this week by helping families, friends, neighbors, co-workers and leaders to recognize the contribution of public health in improving the health of the people of our state and achieving health equity, as the theme states, “It Starts Here.”
