RESOLUTION - Recognizing and honoring Mr. Stanley E. Banks.

WHEREAS, Stanley E. Banks, was born in 1956, his Grandmother was a Bootlegger on Vine Street in Kansas City, Missouri and his Grandfather was a World War I Veteran. Stanley E. Banks is a Graduate of Howard University and University of Missouri-Kansas City Undergraduate and Graduate School; and
WHEREAS, Stanley E. Banks has been a poet, English professor, artist-in- residence at Avila University for 25 years, and the Advisor and Creative Director for Avila University’s student literary magazine titled SOUND AND FURY for 24 years; and
WHEREAS, Stanley E. Banks won the Langston Hughes prize for Poetry in 1981, and in 1989 he was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship/Grant; and
WHEREAS, Stanley E. Banks has five books of poetry published, On 10th Alley Way, Coming from A Funky Time and Place, Rhythm and Guts, Blue Beat Syncopation, and Blue Issues. He edited two books: Stewed Soul and On the Edge of Urban, and also published many poems in magazines, journals, newspapers, and an online publication; and
WHEREAS, Stanley E. Banks has received recognition and awards from The United Minority Media Association’s Leadership from the Midwest-Southeast Regional Conference; The Special Exhibit of Stanley E. Banks’ Life and Literature at the Black Archives of Mid-America, Writers Place Award, The National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship/Grant for Creative Writing, Future Playwrights of America Institute Playwriting Award from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, The Langston Hughes Prize For Poetry from BookMark Press, University Of Missouri-Kansas City and The English Department Award at University of Missouri-Kansas City; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize and honor Stanley E. Banks; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Stanley E. Banks with the express gratitude of the Mayor and Council for his many contributions to the community through his poetry.
