RESOLUTION - Recognizing April 11-17, 2026, as Black Maternal Health Week.

WHEREAS, despite having one of the most advanced health systems in the world, the United States continues to experience the highest pregnancy-related death rate among developed nations, Black women are nearly three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women, and the majority of these deaths are preventable; and
WHEREAS, in Kansas City, these disparities are reflected in maternal and infant health outcomes, with Black mothers and babies facing disproportionately higher risks, underscoring the urgent need for focused, community-driven solutions; and
WHEREAS, established in 2018, Black Maternal Health Week is a national week of awareness, advocacy, and community engagement dedicated to amplifying the voices of Black mothers, advancing Black-led maternal health initiatives, and strengthening the conversation around improving outcomes for Black families; and
WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City recognizes that inequities in healthcare access, social determinants of health, and systemic barriers contribute to these disparities, and affirms the importance of addressing these challenges through policy, partnership, and investment; and
WHEREAS, Kansas City is committed to advancing maternal health through collaboration with healthcare providers, community organizations, and public health partners, including efforts to expand access to quality care, affordable medications, prenatal and postpartum support, and culturally responsive services for families; and
WHEREAS, local organizations, healthcare institutions, and community leaders across Kansas City are working to improve maternal health outcomes by supporting families, strengthening care systems, and addressing the root causes of inequities; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby declare April 11-17, 2026, as Black Maternal Health Week in Kansas City, Missouri, and encourage all residents to support efforts that promote safe pregnancies, healthy births, and strong families across our community; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Uzazi Village and Kansas Birth Equity Network with the sincere appreciation of the Mayor and Council for their dedication and hard work in addressing Black Maternal Health in the Greater Kansas City community.
