RESOLUTION - Declaring the week of February 26 through March 3, 2024, as National Eating Disorder Awareness Week throughout the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, this year’s theme for National Eating Disorder Awareness Week is, “Get in the Know,” so that through knowledge and education we can learn more about eating disorders, get involved in raising awareness and share information and resources; and

 

WHEREAS, eating disorders are serious and complex but treatable medical and mental illnesses that affect 28.8 million Americans at some point in their lives no matter their gender, age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, body shape or weight; and

 

WHEREAS, eating disorders have the 2nd highest mortality rate of any mental illness; and

 

WHEREAS, Black, Indigenous and People of Color are 50% less likely to be diagnosed and receive treatment and are significantly less likely to be asked by a doctor about eating disorder symptoms. LGBTQ+ youth are three times more likely to have an eating disorder compared to their heterosexual peers; and

 

WHEREAS, through awareness we encourage those suffering from an eating disorder to seek support, treatment, and care from local care providers; and

 

WHEREAS, Youth Ambassadors, whose mission is to empower young people to become future community leaders willing and able to work for positive change, and the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department have collaborated to provide an eating disorder event for area youth this Saturday afternoon.  Youth Ambassadors have designed and deployed social media content to intentionally have conversations on social media platforms to raise awareness and engage with youth impacted by eating disorders; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the week of February 26 through March 3, 2024, as National Eating Disorder Awareness Week throughout the City of Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Youth Ambassadors and the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department with the gratitude of the Mayor and Council and encouraging all citizens to increase awareness, education, and services for eating disorders which impact millions of people each year.
