RESOLUTION - Recognizing shared economic, cultural and historical ties between Kansas City and Accra, Ghana; endorsing formal cooperation between Kansas City and Accra, Ghana and the Kansas City Ghana Committee; and honoring Ghana’s Independence Day.

                     WHEREAS, Kansas City and Accra, Ghana share key similarities as regional economic anchors, centers for entrepreneurship, both investing in workforce development, technology, infrastructure and small business growth as part of their long-term strategies for economic competitiveness, and sharing vibrant arts and music communities and diverse populations that contribute to each city’s cultural identity and global outlook; and

 

WHEREAS, the Mayor of Accra has expressed interest in a Sister City partnership with Kansas City and in building a strong, collaborative relationship between the two cities, and Kansas City is considering via separate ordinance the formal establishment of a Sister City relationship, which would create new pathways for trade, business development, educational partnerships, cultural exchange, tourism and innovation benefiting residents and businesses in each city; and

 

WHEREAS, community leaders, business owners and residents in Kansas City are forming the Kansas City Ghana Committee, a civic and cultural partnership group committed to supporting and sustaining any formal Sister City relationship between the two cities through exchanges, programming and economic engagement; and

 

WHEREAS, the Republic of Ghana celebrates its Independence Day each year on March 6, marking its historic achievement as the first nation in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence from colonial rule, and recognized around the world as an event symbolizing freedom, democratic governance, economic self-determination and cultural pride; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Council hereby recognizes the shared economic, cultural and historical ties between Kansas City and Accra, Ghana, endorses formal cooperation between Kansas City and Accra, Ghana and the Kansas City Ghana Committee and honors and celebrates with Ghana on its upcoming Independence Day on March 6.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to the Kansas City Ghana Committee in token and recognition of the friendship between our two cities and in anticipation of a fruitful and prosperous relationship between Kansas City and Accra.
