RESOLUTION - Declaring December 5, 2023, to December 4, 2024, as the Kansas City Public Library's 150th anniversary year.

                     WHEREAS, the Kansas City Public Library, a beacon of knowledge and community enrichment, was established on December 5, 1873, and has served for 150 years as a testament to the City's commitment to education, literacy, and intellectual freedom; and

 

WHEREAS, the founding visionaries and supporters of the Kansas City Public Library recognized the importance of fostering a space that transcends generations, providing a sanctuary for learning, exploration, and cultural engagement; and

 

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Public Library has not only been a source of intellectual growth but has also embraced its role as a sanctuary for Kansas Citians in times of distress, offering solace and support to those seeking refuge, assistance, and community during challenging circumstances; and

 

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Public Library, through its commitment to unrestricted access to information, has empowered citizens to make informed decisions, fostering an engaged and informed citizenry, particularly during times of adversity; and

 

WHEREAS, libraries, including the Kansas City Public Library, have played a crucial role in promoting inclusivity, understanding, and compassion, ensuring that the Library remains a welcoming space for all members of the community; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare December 5, 2023, to December 4, 2024, as the Kansas City Public Library's 150th anniversary year; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Pete Browne with the Mayor and Council urging all residents to join in commemorating this historic milestone by engaging in the Library's celebratory activities, appreciating its rich history, and recognizing its ongoing contributions to the intellectual and cultural tapestry of our community.
