RESOLUTION - Acknowledging Veterans Day on November 11th in the United States and recognizing the contributions of Ron Cherry with the Veterans of Foreign Wars to receive this special action.

WHEREAS, the United States established the legal holiday of Veterans Day on June 1, 1954; and

 

WHEREAS, the history of Veterans Day dates back to June 28, 1919, when the Treaty of Versailles was signed, but the significance of the date is that the ceasefire occurred seven months prior and went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month on November 11, 1918; and

 

WHEREAS, the history of the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) predates Veterans Day, serving military veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) so that veterans can secure the rights and benefits for their service; and

 

WHEREAS, the mission of the VFW is to foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflict, to serve our veterans, the military, and our communities, to advocate on behalf of all veterans and the vision of the VFW is to ensure that veterans are respected for their service, always receive their earned entitlements, and are recognized for the sacrifices they and their loved ones have made on behalf of this great country; and

 

WHEREAS, the VFW supports their mission and vision through vital support programs in education, advocacy, financial assistance, and camaraderie; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2024, the organization has over 2,000 accredited service officers helping veterans fight for the VA benefits they have earned, and has helped veterans recoup a total amount of $14.6 billion in VA disability compensation and pension benefits in the fiscal year 2024; and

 

WHEREAS, Ron Cherry has been a faithful steward of the VFW’s mission as a VFW accredited service officer for more than 25 years; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby reaffirm and acknowledge the 11th Day in November as Veterans Day in the City of Kansas City, and recognize the Veterans of Foreign Wars for its legacy of service and contributions; and 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Ron Cherry with the Mayor and Council asking everyone to take a moment to recognize the sacrifice and service that Veterans Day represents and for the legacy of organizations that support Veterans in that service.
