RESOLUTION - Supporting the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1’s appeal for job protections, better working conditions, and deserved paid time off for LAZ Traffic Control Officers at Kansas City International Airport.

WHEREAS, the Traffic Control Officers performing this work face high turnover driven by a lack of job protections, dangerous working conditions, outdoor work during prolonged periods of inclement weather, and very little paid time off; and

 

WHEREAS, these essential workers have worked continuously to keep the airport safe and functional for public use; and

                     

WHEREAS, these essential workers will play an essential role as Kansas City prepares to welcome increased travel activity connected to FIFA World Cup matches beginning this June; and

 

WHEREAS, these essential workers will maintain safe vehicle and pedestrian traffic for arriving passengers and visitors from all over the world, and their role will become even more important; and

 

WHEREAS, the monetary value of LAZ’s contract at MCI is a one-year service agreement with the Kansas City Aviation Department valued at approximately $1.7 million; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby support the SEIU Local 1’s appeal to Kansas City International Airport and LAZ to ensure that these essential Traffic Control Officers are given job protections, better working conditions, and deserved paid time off; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to SEIU Local 1 with the Mayor and Council urging regional, civic and business leaders to commit to providing these essential workers with the working conditions and deserved benefits for their work with the goal being to enable working people get the respect at work they deserve.
