RESOLUTION - Acknowledging October 2023 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Kansas City; recognizing the efforts of A Store Named Stuff to raise funds in the fight against cancer; and celebrating those that have overcome it. ?

WHEREAS, the discovery that breast cancer, which effects both men and women, is not one disease, but many, makes it imperative that we increase funding for genetic research and treatment; and
?
? WHEREAS, a sharp decline in breast and cervical cancer screenings during the COVID-19 pandemic has been shown through the CDC's National Early Detection Program, which threatens to delay diagnosis and increase cancer disparities in women that are already experiencing health inequities; and
?
? WHEREAS, in her lifetime, 1 out of 8 women will develop breast cancer, making it the leading cause of cancer deaths in women ages 15-54 affecting roughly 240,000 women, 2,600 men each year and over 40,000 deaths annually. Every person's support is needed in the fight against breast cancer; and
?
? WHEREAS, we celebrate the research advancement in the treatment of breast cancer and the lives saved as we continue to learn how to combat breast cancer; and
?
? WHEREAS, Sloan and Casey Simmons annually host a Holiday Open House: Wings of Hope, to be held this year from November 3-5, at A Store Named Stuff, where 15% of all sales are donated to the Simmons Family Cancer Research Fund; NOW, THEREFORE,

?BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

? That the Mayor and Council hereby celebrate the efforts made the month of October 2023 during "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in Kansas City and encourage all citizens to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and
