WHEREAS, City Council adopted Vision Zero through Resolution No. 200019 on May 24, 2020; and

WHEREAS, the goal of Vision Zero is to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries on Kansas City's streets by 2030 while increasing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for everyone; and
WHEREAS, 50 to 100 people are killed in traffic crashes in Kansas City each year and hundreds more are seriously injured; and

WHEREAS, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users are significantly overrepresented among those killed or seriously injured in traffic crashes; and

WHEREAS, serious traffic crashes and injuries are entirely preventable through better street design and data-driven enforcement; and

WHEREAS, streets are the public realm and should be designed to a higher standard as safe and comfortable places for all people, in order to equitably support the common good; and

WHEREAS, Mid-America Regional Council is developing a safety action plan and is developing a crosswalk compliance campaign as a part of their plan; and

WHEREAS, appropriately funding projects and methods contributing to the elimination of traffic fatalities and serious injuries advances established Vision Zero goals; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
