RESOLUTION - Recognizing the UGO Film and Music International Workshop presented by Creative City KC.

WHEREAS, two-time Academy Award Winner Willie D. Burton, sound engineer for iconic films such as "Shawshank Redemption," Christopher Nolan's most recent blockbuster "Oppenheimer" and the most watched television mini-series of all-time "Roots", is one of two African Americans to receive the Academy Award for Best Sound; and
WHEREAS, Dorez Douglas a seasoned Film/TV Producer and Hollywood Insider, and has over 30 years' experience working with legendary actors such as Diahann Carroll, James Avery and Paul Winfield, has been featured as a guest on NBC, KTLA and numerous podcasts, and has worked for ABC-TV, Sony, MGM, and Disney; and
WHEREAS, Burton and Douglas, the principal instructors of the UGO Film and Music Workshop by invitation of Creative City KC, a UNESCO Creative Cities Network organization, will train youth in the Kansas City area in the fundamentals of filmmaking and the connection between film and music; and
WHEREAS, the workshop will collaborate with local film and music industry experts in Kansas City and will culminate in a short film documentary produced by students in June 2024, capturing the historical significance of the Dunbar Neighborhood and the Quindaro Ruins, preserving their stories and significance as world heritage sites; and
WHEREAS, the workshop will provide young people with specific jobs skills that can lead to employment and training, ensuring consistent flow of skilled labor and boosting the overall economy; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby extend their thanks and appreciation to Willie D. Burton and Dorez Douglas for the invaluable contributions they have made to film and music; and
