RESOLUTION - Declaring May 2026 as ALS Awareness Month.

body

WHEREAS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as “ALS,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, slowly reducing a person’s ability to walk, talk, eat, and eventually breathe                     ; and

WHEREAS, there are over 30,000 people in the United States living with ALS; and

WHEREAS, despite being discovered in 1869, there is no known cure for the disease; and

WHEREAS, because the exact causes of ALS are unknown, funding for clinical trials is vital for evaluating new treatments and enhancing the quality of life for ALS patients; and

WHEREAS, the ALS Association is the largest philanthropic funder of ALS research globally; and

WHEREAS, ALS Awareness Month raises public awareness of the disease and the impact it has on ALS patients and their families; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare May as ALS Awareness Month and express their support for the passage of the Accelerating Access to Critical Therapies (ACT) for ALS Act in the United States Congress; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the ALS Association with the gratitude of the Mayor and Council for their efforts in advocating on behalf of those with ALS.
