RESOLUTION - Requesting that the LGBTQIA+ Commission provide a legislative recommendation regarding the recent repeal of Section 50-234, entitled “Conversion therapy of minors prohibited,” and report back to Council within 30 days.

WHEREAS, due to a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Chilies v. Salazar, the Council recently repealed Section 50-234, “Conversion therapy of minors prohibited”; and
WHEREAS, the Council believes it is necessary to enact a prohibition on conversion therapy that will withstand future legal challenges; and
WHEREAS, the LGBTQIA+ Commission serves as an advisory body to the Mayor, City Council, and City Manager on LGBTQIA+ matters and legislation that advance social, economic, and political equality for the LGBTQIA+ community; and
WHEREAS, the Council seeks the Commission’s input to determine how best to protect Kansas City residents from the harms of practice of therapy; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the City Council requests that the LGBTQIA+ Commission provide guidance on legislation regarding the recent repeal of Section 50-234, entitled “Conversion therapy of minors prohibited,” and report back to the City Council within 30 days, unless additional time is requested by the commission.
