RESOLUTION - Honoring Kansas City’s Black employees and residents for their contributions to Kansas City, declaring Black History Month in Kansas City, and authorizing the City Manager to fly the Pan-African Flag.

WHEREAS, February is nationally recognized as Black History Month throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, the achievements of Black Kansas Citians from all walks of life throughout Kansas City’s history have had a deep and lasting impact; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of Black History month is to make all Americans aware of the struggle for freedom and equal opportunity and to highlight the contributions that Black Americans have had in their communities and the country as a whole; and
WHEREAS, flying the Pan-African Flag, also known as the Black Liberation Flag, honors the long history and valuable contributions of the Black community in Kansas City; and
WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to acknowledge and celebrate the heritage, perseverance, and achievements of Black Kansas Citians; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Kansas City’s Black employees and residents for their contributions to Kansas City, declare Black History Month to be observed from February 1 to March 1, and authorize the City Manager to fly the Pan-African Flag at City Hall; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to ASSET, the employee resource group for Black Kansas City employees, with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for all the achievements to our community and workforce.
