RESOLUTION - Acknowledging October 2024 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Kansas City and recognizing our family members and friends that have been affected by this disease.
body
WHEREAS, the early mission of Breast Cancer Awareness Month aimed to “fill the information void” surrounding breast cancer. Betty Ford was the first major advocate for breast cancer awareness after she was diagnosed in 1974. Her willingness to speak out about her experience shattered the silence and brought breast cancer to the forefront of public discussion. Since then, October has become a month emphasizing the education and empowerment of individuals in taking charge of their breast health; and
WHEREAS, breast cancer affects both men and women and is not one disease but many, making it imperative we increase funding for genetic research and treatment; and
WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity to inform our communities about breast cancer making our citizens more aware of resources for early detection, education and support; and
WHEREAS, in 2024, it is estimated that more than 310,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer; and
WHEREAS, Kansas City’s skyline will be illuminated in pink in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby declare October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and
THAT IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Shari Mahrer, Andria “Rena” Wells and Michelle Cox with the gratitude of the Mayor and Council for their efforts in spreading awareness of breast cancer.
