RESOLUTION - Honoring and declaring August 29, 2023, as Joanne Collins Day.

WHEREAS, it is with great pride and admiration that we recognize the exceptional achievements of Joanne Collins, a trailblazer and visionary leader who has made substantial contributions to our community; and
WHEREAS, Joanne shattered glass ceilings and broke barriers as the first African American woman to serve as a City Council member in Kansas City, Missouri, elected in 1974, she was re-elected to the position in the 1975, 1979, 1983, and 1987 general elections before retiring in 1991; and
WHEREAS, Joanne Collins's tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to public service have earned her the distinction of becoming the first African American woman to hold the esteemed position of Mayor Pro Tem and Acting Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, setting an inspiring example for generations to come; and
WHEREAS, throughout her illustrious career as a councilwoman, she served as chair of the Youth Development Committee, the Community Action Committee, and the Finance and Audit Committee.; and
WHEREAS, Joanne Collins has served with over 50 organizations including MOKAN Advisory Board and Emily Taylor Women's Resource Center Advisory Board/KU. She was a member of Salvation Army, Church Women United/KCMO, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc and a lifelong member of the St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church/KCKS, and many more.; and
WHEREAS, Joanne Collins's birthday on August 29 serves as a reminder of her remarkable journey, her unwavering determination, and her dedication to serving the people of Kansas City, Missouri; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY
That the Mayor and Council herby recognize August 29, 2023, as "Joanne Collins Day" in Kansas City, Missouri; and
