RESOLUTION - Recognizing May as Mental Health Awareness Month and Advancing Mental Health First Aid Across the Kansas City community.

WHEREAS, Mental Health Awareness Month, observed annually in May, serves as an important opportunity to raise public awareness about mental health; and

WHEREAS, access to mental health education and prevention strategies is critical to strengthening community well-being, improving early identification of mental health challenges, and equipping individuals to respond effectively and compassionately; and

WHEREAS, Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based public education program that teaches how to recognize signs and symptoms of mental health challenges, provide support, and connect individuals to professional and community resources; and

WHEREAS, Plaza Academy has demonstrated leadership and dedication to student mental health and well-being by implementing teen Mental Health First Aid during this 2026-2027 school year, ensuring that students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to support themselves and their peers; and

WHEREAS, this initiative has been made possible through the support of key partners, including the Missouri Department of Mental Health, Mental Health First Aid Missouri, Missouri Institute of Mental Health, Mental Health First Aid instructors and supporters; and

WHEREAS, Mental Health First Aid instructors throughout the Kansas City area play a vital role in delivering this prevention-focused training, building community capacity, and fostering a culture of understanding, empathy, and proactive mental health support; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
