Recognizing Joanne Collins for her extraordinary legacy of leadership, service, and community engagement and dedicating this training room in her honor, to be henceforth known as the Joanne Collins Training Room and declaring August 29, 2024, as Joanne Collins Day.

WHEREAS, it is with immense pride and deep admiration that we recognize the exceptional achievements and contributions of Joanne Collins, a trailblazer and visionary leader who has made substantial impacts on our community; and
WHEREAS, Joanne Collins shattered glass ceilings and broke barriers as the first African American woman to serve as a City Council member in Kansas City, Missouri. Elected in 1974, Joanne Collins demonstrated unwavering dedication and exemplary service by being re-elected in the general elections of 1975, 1979, 1983, and 1987 before retiring in 1991; and
WHEREAS, throughout her illustrious career and beyond, Joanne Collins has been an active and influential participant in over 50 organizations, including the MOKAN Advisory Board, the Emily Taylor Women's Resource Center Advisory Board at the University of Kansas, the Salvation Army, Church Women United of Kansas City, Missouri, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and has also been a lifelong member of the St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church in Kansas City, Kansas, among many other notable affiliations; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
Section 1. That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize Joanne Collins’s extraordinary legacy of leadership, service, and community engagement, and hereby dedicate the 8th floor training room in her honor, to be henceforth known as the Joanne Collins Training Room.
