RESOLUTION - Declaring October 7, 2023, the 50th Anniversary Sister City Day for Kansas City and Morelia.

WHEREAS, Kansas City, Missouri USA and Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico are celebrating their Golden Anniversary, 50 Years of being Sister Cities; and
WHEREAS, the Sister Cities partnership began in January 1973 with an agreement signed by Dr. Charles B. Wheeler, Mayor of Kansas City and Lic. Marco Antonio Aguilar Cort?z, Mayor of Morelia; and
WHEREAS, the two cities have developed and continue to enjoy a strong economic and cultural relationship; and
WHEREAS, both cities share the important trade connection through the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) railroad, are designated Creative Cities of Music by UNESCO and are united by the wonder of the Monarch Butterflies as they travel through North America; and
WHEREAS, both are graced with many beautiful fountains and a replica of the Las Tarascas statues, the most famous fountain of Morelia, was gifted to Kansas City for the 40th anniversary of their partnership; and
WHEREAS, several dignitaries are celebrating in Kansas City from Morelia are Alfonso Mart?nez Alc?zar, Mayor of Morelia, Michoac?n, Mexico (invited), Oscar del Cueto Cuevas, President and Executive Representative of CPKC de M?xico as guest speaker, and the "Estudiantina" musical group from La Salle University in Morelia led by Director, Dr. Jesus Vazquez Estupinan; and
WHEREAS, Gloria Bessenbacher, long-time Chair of the Morelia-KC sister city relationship, is Chairwoman of the 50th Anniversary Celebration on October 7, 2023; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby declare October 7, 2023 the Anniversary Sister City Day for Kansas City and Morelia; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereo...
