RESOLUTION - Recognizing and honoring the Carter Broadcast Group on the occasion of its 75th anniversary as the oldest continuously Black-owned and family-operated radio broadcast company in the United States, and celebrating its historic and cultural contributions to Kansas City.

WHEREAS, the Carter Broadcast Group, founded in 1950, is the oldest continuously Black-owned and family-operated radio broadcast company in the United States, and has played a pivotal role in uplifting Black voices, culture, music, and news for 75 years; and
WHEREAS, the company was founded by the late Andrew "Skip" Carter, a visionary engineer, veteran, and media pioneer, who overcame racial discrimination and systemic barriers in the broadcasting industry to fulfill his dream of starting a radio station, becoming the second Black American to receive an FCC license to do so; and
WHEREAS, in 1950, Andrew Carter launched KPRS - Kansas City's "People's Radio Station" - making history as the first Black-owned radio station west of the Mississippi River and a cornerstone of cultural connection through music, community news, and empowerment; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of Michael Carter, grandson of Andrew Carter and current President of the Carter Broadcast Group, the company has continued to thrive as a multigenerational business dedicated to authenticity, innovation, and community service; and
WHEREAS, the Carter Broadcast Group, which today operates KPRS Hot 103 Jamz, KPRT Gospel 106.1FM /1590AM, and RNB 106.9FM/103.3HD2, has cultivated generations of radio professionals and remains a vital institution in Kansas City's media and cultural landscape; NOW THEREFORE,
