RESOLUTION - Declaring June 2024 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month in Kansas City, Missouri; and authorizing the City Manager to display flags celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

WHEREAS, on June 28, 1969, the LGBTQ community took a stand for human rights and dignity at the Stonewall Inn in New York City in 1969, marking the first major demonstration for LGBTQ+ equal rights; and

WHEREAS, on February 18, 1966, three years before the events of Stonewall, the "National Planning Conference of Homophile Organizations" met in Kansas City. This was the first ever gathering of Gay & Lesbian civil rights leaders from different organizations from across the country; and

WHEREAS, each June, Kansas City joins other cities and towns throughout the United States to recognize LGBTQ+ Pride Month, to celebrate the courage and bravery it takes for LGBTQ+ people to live as their authentic selves, and to build community support and equal rights for all; and

WHEREAS, Kansas City is a leader among cities nationwide to take legislative steps to ensure diversity and inclusion in City government, create safe spaces and equitable policies and adopt municipal initiatives designed to support the LGBTQ+ community in feeling welcome and thriving in their authentic lives; and

WHEREAS, Kansas City supports many pride events occurring this month to include as Pride on the Vine (June 1), KC PrideFest (June 7-9), and Trans Pride (June 14-16) and People's Pride (June 23) and more; and

WHEREAS, LGBTQ+ Pride Month offers an opportunity to learn about the discrimination and inequality that the LGBTQ+ community has and continue to face, while celebrating the work of the individuals and organizations who have strived to create equality for all; NOW, THEREFORE,
