RESOLUTION - Declaring the week of May 3-9, 2026, as National Correctional Professionals Week in Kansas City.

WHEREAS, a 1984 Presidential Proclamation officially made the first week in May one to remember the work and sacrifices of America's correctional officers and employees; and

WHEREAS correctional officers are trained law enforcement professionals dedicated to maintaining safe correctional environments and ensuring public safety; and

WHEREAS, in Kansas City, correctional professionals perform an essential public service, maintaining safety and security within correctional facilities while upholding the dignity and rights of all individuals in custody; and

WHEREAS, these dedicated professionals, including Majors, Captains, Sergeants, Officers and Administrative Team members, work tirelessly, often under challenging and dangerous conditions, demonstrating extraordinary courage, professionalism, and resilience; and

WHEREAS, correctional officers and employees play an important role in guiding individuals toward rehabilitation by offering structure, encouragement, and support, helping them successfully build productive lives beyond incarceration; and

WHEREAS, the community recognizes the significant contributions of correctional professionals, especially as we look toward the future of corrections in Kansas City, where their expertise and dedication will be crucial to the success of the journey ahead; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and necessary to set aside one week each year to formally recognize, honor, and express deep appreciation for correctional professionals, whose tireless efforts, often carried out behind the scenes, are essential to the safety of the public; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
