RESOLUTION - Designating the week of September 30 to October 6, 2024, as the Week Without Driving in Kansas City.

WHEREAS, the Week Without Driving started as a challenge launched by Anna Zivarts at Disability Rights Washington in 2021; and

 

WHEREAS, the Week Without Driving became a national event through collaboration with the organization America Walks in 2023; and

 

WHEREAS, the Week Without Driving is intended to draw attention to the fact that a third of Americans cannot or are unable to drive; and

 

WHEREAS, this includes people living with disabilities, the elderly, children, immigrants and refugees, and people who cannot afford a car; and

 

WHEREAS, people who are non-drivers often face significant barriers to mobility such as inadequate sidewalks, poor transit, lack of connectivity, lack of transportation options, and dangerous roads; and

 

WHEREAS, the needs of non-drivers are not considered in transportation infrastructure and policies; and

 

WHEREAS, the goal of Kansas City and the region at large, should be to develop and design a transportation system that supports the mobility needs of  all individuals, regardless of ability, age, income or mode; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the week of September 30 to October 6, 2024, as the Week Without Driving in Kansas City; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to BikeWalkKC and Michael Kelley with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for their service to our community.
