RESOLUTION - Honoring the life of former Mayor Richard L. Berkley (1931-2023).

WHEREAS, Mayor Berkley was Kansas City’s longest-serving mayor, having served three terms (1979-1991); and
WHEREAS, Mayor Berkley was the first Jewish mayor in the history of Kansas City; and
WHEREAS, prior to becoming mayor, Richard Berkley represented the 4th District on the City Council; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Berkley oversaw the transformation of the downtown skyline, the expansion of Bartle Hall, and led the response to the Hyatt Regency walkway collapse; and
WHEREAS, Richard Berkley served Tension Envelope as Treasurer and on its Board of Directors; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Berkley was known for his humble personality and as a mentor to many throughout our community, leaving a legacy of service that will ripple throughout Kansas City for generations to come; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Berkley is survived by his wife, Sandy, two children, Elizabeth and Jon, and three grandchildren; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby recognizes Mayor Richard L. Berkley for his lifelong service and commitment to the people of Kansas City; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Mayor Berkley’s family in appreciation of his decades of service and dedication to Kansas City.
