RESOLUTION - Recognizing April 29, 2026, as National Denim Day and honoring the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence for their work in the community.

WHEREAS, sexual assault remains a serious and pervasive issue affecting individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and communities, with lasting impacts on survivors, families, and neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, raising awareness, supporting survivors, and promoting a culture of respect and accountability are essential to building safer communities; and

WHEREAS, National Denim Day began as a response to a 1998 court ruling that perpetuated harmful myths about sexual assault and victim blaming, and has since become a global movement to challenge those misconceptions; and

WHEREAS, wearing denim on this day is a visible symbol of solidarity with survivors of sexual violence and a commitment to standing against victim blaming; and

WHEREAS, communities across the country, including Kansas City, continue to work together to educate, prevent violence, and support survivors through advocacy, resources, and partnerships; and

WHEREAS, it is important to reaffirm our shared responsibility to create a city where every person feels safe, respected, and supported; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare April 29, 2026, as National Denim Day in Kansas City, and encourage all residents to wear denim as a sign of support for survivors, to raise awareness, and to stand united in the effort to end sexual violence; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, with the sincere appreciation of the Mayor and Council for their tireless work in building s...
