RESOLUTION - Declaring May 4, 2023, as Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

WHEREAS, Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day is held on the fourth Thursday of every year in the month of April and this year's annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day will be held on May 4, 2023; and

 

WHEREAS, the Ms. Foundation for Women founded Take Our Daughters to work in 1993 and in April 2003 decided to broaden the discussion about the competing challenges of work and family, understanding for girls to achieve their full potential, whether it is the home, workplace, or community, boys also must be encouraged to reach their potential by participating fully in work, family, and community which launched Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day; and

 

WHEREAS, girls and boys want and envision a future where they can be involved in all aspects. In a study conducted by the Families and Work Institute, 90 percent of students who said they plan to have a job also plan to have children, and that 81 percent of those girls and 60 percent of boys said they will reduce their work hours when they have children; and

 

WHEREAS, by creating an opportunity for girls and boys to share their expectations for the future in the context of seeing new opportunities, we will begin a conversation about the changes girls and boys hope for and encourage them to think about how their dreams - both for their work and family lives - can be achieved; and

 

WHEREAS, Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work reaches a new generation at work and introduces girls and boys to a discussion about the future of their workplace through interactive workplace activities and meaningful dialogues that encourages girls and boys to think about work and home life in ways they may never have before; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare May 4, 2023, as Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day and welcome all young women and men who are joining our workforce on this special day; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution is spread upon the Minutes of the Council in Testimony therefore and that copies hereof be presented to all City employer participants in recognition of the importance of daughters and sons at our workplace.
