RESOLUTION - Honoring Latino members of the City's staff and all Latino/Hispanic/Latinx residents for their contributions to the life and culture of our city, especially during Hispanic Heritage Month 2023.

WHEREAS, special recognition should be provided to those City employees who have been working to create a new employee resource group known as VAMOS KC, including Karen N. Lopez, Ivet Dresnick, Alejandra Sicairos, Chris Hernandez, Monica Castro, Araceli Maga?a, Marleny Flores, Erica Torres, Daliah West, Cynthia Jaramillo Carlson, Rio Cervantes-Reed, Cherisse Walters, and Leidy Quitian Varon, among others; and

WHEREAS, Vamos KC has organized the City's first Hispanic Heritage Month kickoff celebration, known as Fiesta Latina, to be held Friday, September 15, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Ilus Davis Park; and

WHEREAS, Latinos and Hispanics in Kansas City represent many different countries, backgrounds, and cultural experiences that create a vibrant and strong community; and

WHEREAS, more than 11 percent of Kansas City's population is Hispanic, and the national Latino/Hispanic buying power exceeds two trillion dollars; and

WHEREAS, National Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from September 15 through October 15, paying tribute to Americans from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, and Central and South America who have contributed greatly to our society; and

WHEREAS, there will be many other cultural events throughout Kansas City, such as Fiesta Hispana at Barney Allis Plaza September 15 through 17, and all are encouraged to attend these events; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby extend their appreciation to these Kansas City employees who have organized Fiesta Latina to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month; and
