RESOLUTION - Designating the month of October 2023 and recognizing the week of October 8th as the 101st anniversary of "National Fire Prevention Week" in Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, fires are a serious safety concern both locally and nationally; and

WHEREAS, people face the greatest risk of fire in their homes. Every twenty-three seconds, a fire department responds to a fire somewhere in the nation. A fire occurs in a structure at the rate of one every sixty-five seconds, and a home fire occurs every ninety-three seconds; and

WHEREAS, according to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 1.3 million fires were reported by fire departments in 2021, resulting in approximately 3,800 deaths 14,700 civilian injuries and 15.9 billion in property damage; and

WHEREAS, seventy-five percent of all fire deaths were caused by home fires. This includes sixty-four percent that resulted from fires in one- or two-family homes, and eleven percent caused by fires in apartments or multi-family housing; and

WHEREAS, cooking fires are the leading cause of home fire injuries. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths; and

WHEREAS, the NFPA has chosen as this year's theme "Cooking Safety Starts with You. Pay attention fire prevention" and works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe when cooking; and

WHEREAS, Kansas City first responders exhibit great dedication to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education and through their quick response to emergencies; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
