Honoring Pride Month and celebrating the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) for their commitment to support the LGBTQIA+ community in Kansas City.

WHEREAS, UMKC was founded on October 1, 1933, when a group of 260 students began classes and joined with 2,000 community members to celebrate the opening of campus, beginning the long tradition of civic engagement, a hallmark of this university; and

 

WHEREAS, UMKC is recognized as a Premier Campus by Campus Pride Index, which signifies UMKC’s commitment to LGBTQIA+ inclusive polices, programs and practices; and 

 

WHEREAS, UMKC shares a list of faculty and staff who have demonstrated their support of the LGBTQIA+ community thereby creating an inclusive, welcoming campus and allowing students to identify mentors or a support network at UMKC; and

 

WHEREAS, the Chancellor’s LGBT Council was formed in 2014 and is comprised of community leaders who are committed to assisting UMKC in meeting the needs of its LGBTQIA+ community and a partner in addressing LGBTQIA+ issues; and

 

WHEREAS, the Gay & Lesbian Archive of Mid-America, a partnership between the La Budde Special Collection of UMKC’s Miller Nichols and the Kansas City Museum, preserves documents and artifacts that reflect the histories of the LGBTQIA+ community; and

 

WHEREAS, the UMKC Pride Breakfast raises funds to support LGBTQIA+ students and demonstrates the university's support of, and commitment to, their students. These funds benefit programs and scholarships, including the Pride Empowerment Fund, providing emergency assistance to students who experience financial difficulty due to loss of family support; and

 

WHEREAS, UMKC is committed to ensuring the campus is inclusive of all gender and sexual identities and demonstrates this commitment through programs, services, resources and opportunities to create a welcoming environment.; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor the University of Missouri - Kanas City; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Curt Crespino with the gratitude of the Mayor and Council for UMKC’s impact on Kansas City and their role in supporting the LGBTQIA+ community.
