Honoring Greater KC Junior Boxing Olympians competing in the 50th Annual National Junior Olympics.

WHEREAS, USA Boxing Junior Olympians took part in the 50th Annual National Junior Olympics, held on July 9-16, 2022, at the Century II Performing Arts & Convention Center in Wichita, Kansas; and

 

WHEREAS, the Junior Olympians are the nation’s best up and coming boxers who competed in one of the oldest and most historic USA boxing national tournaments under the leadership of parents and coaches, Melvin Wesley Sr, Juaquan Herron, Mika Ross, Courtney Epperson, Maury Williams, Pound4Pound Boxing Gym, Leo Moreno Jr. Boxing, ATG Boxing, City Life Boxing Gym; and

 

WHEREAS, since becoming an organized sport in 1888, Olympic-style or amateur boxing has evolved in its tradition of excellence. The sport first gained Olympic inclusion in 1904 and since that time, United States boxers have won 111 Olympic medals: 49 gold, 23 silver and 39 bronze, which leads the all-time medal count as the world leader among nations in creating competitive boxing opportunities; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1946, International Amateur Boxing Association was formed and nearly 30 years later, junior boxing made its way to the ring; and

 

WHEREAS, women’s boxing started in October 1993 with its first recorded victory. In 2012, women’s boxing made its debut in the Olympics with three weight divisions - flyweight, lightweight, and middleweight; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Phoenix Herron, Brijhana Epperson, Melvin Wesley, and Malachi Ross for their winning achievements of the 2022 USA Boxing Junior Olympics; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Pound4Pound Boxing Gym, Leo Moreno Jr. Boxing Club, ATG-Boxing and City Life Boxing Gym with the Mayor and Council honoring all youth who participate with discipline, endurance, and encouragement towards each other for their athletic success in our city.
