Recognizing the week of October 9-15 2022, as National Fire Prevention Week and recognizing the Kansas City Fire Historical Society for their preservation of Kansas City’s fire history.

WHEREAS, Kansas City, Missouri has recognized the lifesaving impact of National Fire Prevention Week and educating all citizens on fire prevention and safety methods; and

 

WHEREAS, fires impact Missouri and Kansas City to a great extent. Structural fires in Missouri account for 92.3% of all fire deaths, which is almost 15% higher than the national average. Missouri lost over one billion dollars in 2015 alone due to fires, as such, Kansas City must recognize fires as a key issue in our community; and

 

WHEREAS, National Fire Prevention Week is an historic public health campaign. History plays a key role in National Fire Prevention Week and in Kansas City. The Kansas City Fire Historical Society is dedicated to preserving that history for all to learn and understand not only the long history of Kansas City’s Fire Department but the importance of fire prevention; and

 

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Fire Department has spent countless years dedicated to educating the public on the importance of fire safety and prevention to preserve life and reduce injuries caused by preventable fires. Kansas City has been known for its outstanding Fire Department, the commitment, passion, and heroism of the KCFD and all who serve among their ranks speaks to their bravery and importance to our city; and

 

WHEREAS, this year, the theme for Fire Prevention Week is “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escapeTM” This theme focuses on planning an easy and simple escape from a fire. It works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize October 9 - October 15, 2022, as National Fire Prevention Week; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Fire Chief Donna Lake, Chief Fire Marshal James Dean, KCFD Fire Prevention Division, and The Kansas City Fire Historical Society for their commitment to the preservation of our rich history and Kansas City’s future of fire prevention.
